2019-2020: What We Worked On

For anyone not as familiar with the work of the Environment Committee: Welcome! We hope that sharing this can give you a better idea. And, for anyone who helped us out this year, a huge thank you! We wouldn't get to do what we do without being a student group.

Fall 2019

Sustainable Events Training -- At the beginning of the term, we taught club leaders how to lead socially and environmentally sustainable events. Our guide can be found under the resources tab!

Apple Picking at Mac campus -- In October, we ran the annual tradition of a SSMU Environment apple picking trip. This time, we went to Mac campus to see where some of our produce comes from and to support local food!

Waste Education Video -- With TV McGill, we completed a waste-sorting education video and this will be in future tutorials for incoming students.

A Fair Trade Baking Workshop --

October was also Fair Trade month at McGill. In support, we made banana bread with as many fair trade ingredients as possible. The group went into a discussion of what purchasing food sustainably means and into the value and challenges of food certifications.

Pink it Yourself -- The purpose was to explain the toxins that go into our bodies and environment due to using commercial cosmetics. We made our own cosmetics and had a guest speaker.

No Waste November -- We hosted a Zero Waste Walking tour, a DIY Beeswax Wraps workshop, collaborated with the Science Undergraduate Society Environment Committee for BYOM (Bring Your Own Mug) coffee, led a DIY Hummus workshop, and finished the month off with a clothing swap!

Setting up Nutritowers in McGill Cafeterias -- Vertical gardens were set up in the McGill cafeterias (RVC, BMH, New Residence) as part of an SPF (Sustainability Projects Fund). These were maintained by volunteers and were intended to make the space feel greener.

SPF Plant Giveaway -- This was a collaboration with MOOS (the McGill Office of Sustainability) for the 10th anniversary of the SPF. We had 1,500 plants in total and they were all given out within an hour!

ECOLE Coffeehouse -- With the ECOLE coordinators, we opened up the ECOLE living and project space on Thursdays between 1-4 for any students interested in coming in to meet other students or to use the space.

Spring 2020

McGill Environmental Engagement Program -- This was a year-long effort to put together dialogue-based environmental justice education for high school students around Montreal. We visited 5 classrooms and will continue to next fall!

Student Sustainability Network -- This event allowed 25 environmental groups on campus to showcase their work and give students the opportunity to get involved.

Mug reuse -- This project is to reduce the use of single-use coffee cups in the McConnell Engineering building. We have collected mugs and engraved them. They will be available next semester for a small deposit fee!
